Publishers of Bill Withers’ catalogue alleged in a California legal complaint that Olivia Dean’s song I’ve Seen It copied the melody of Just the Two of Us, BBC News reported. The challenged track appeared on Dean’s 2025 album The Art of Loving. The lawsuit named Capitol Records, Universal Music Group and publishing companies as defendants, but did not seek damages from Dean or co-writers Bastian Langebæk and Max Wolfgang. Mattie Music Group said it commissioned a musicologist whose analysis identified substantial similarities between the compositions. These were allegations in a complaint, not findings that infringement had occurred. The publishers said they notified Dean’s label in August and that the song remained available. Their argument also relied on the older composition’s commercial prominence and decades of radio exposure as evidence that the songwriters could have encountered it. The BBC said the defendants had not yet responded to the lawsuit and that it had approached them, along with Dean’s representatives, for comment.
