Open any app and it already knows. Before you’ve tapped a single thing, an algorithm has arranged the entire experience around one question — not “what would make this person happy?” but “what would keep this person here?” Those two questions look similar. They are not the same. And the gap between them is where a lot of modern misery quietly lives.

Optimised for time, not truth

The feed doesn’t care whether something is true, kind, or good for you. It cares whether you stay. Every scroll, pause, and replay is a vote, and the system counts every vote instantly, endlessly, on billions of people at once. It has run more experiments on human attention than every psychologist in history combined — and it learns faster than you do.

Why it drifts toward the extreme

Calm, balanced, reasonable content is a commercial problem: it doesn’t hook. Outrage hooks. Fear hooks. Envy hooks. So the machine, with no opinion of its own, learns to nudge you toward the content that provokes the strongest reaction. Not because anyone is evil, but because the incentive points there. The result is a slow tilt of a whole society toward its own sharpest edges.

The personalised prison

The scariest part is that no two people see the same world anymore. Your feed is built for you alone, reinforcing what you already believe and clicking, tighter and tighter, around your existing fears. You feel more informed while actually seeing less. It’s a room with a billion doors that all open onto the same mirror.

Getting the wheel back

You can’t out-willpower a system engineered by thousands of people to hold you. But you can change the terrain. Turn off autoplay. Kill the notifications that yank you back in. Deliberately follow things that challenge you, not just things that flatter you. And every so often, put the thing down and let boredom happen — because a mind that can tolerate boredom is a mind that can’t be so easily farmed.

The algorithm isn’t trying to inform you or entertain you. It’s trying to keep you. The first step to freedom is simply remembering that.
