Sixteen-year-old singer Nene Royal became the first Thai contestant to win America’s Got Talent, BBC News reported. Her real name is Rattikarn Amloy. In the California final, she performed the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army and prevailed over nine other finalists, including magic acts, dog performers and a robot dance crew. Her audition performance of the Cranberries’ Zombie had already become a viral success, with the BBC reporting 20 million views for a clip. During the results programme, she also performed The Emptiness Machine with Linkin Park. Winning the competition’s twenty-first season carried a prize of one million dollars. The BBC described celebrations in Thailand and an official government message presenting her achievement as an inspiration to ambitious young people. Thai supporters who could not watch NBC’s live television broadcast followed a YouTube stream instead. Some experienced an interruption during the results announcement, adding uncertainty before they learned that the teenage rocker had won the competition.
